Well the rain it is falling And the streams they start to flow And the river it is rising Down here in the valley below And before all that water Can flow down and to the sea There'll be high water rising High water running over me Well the bridges they are breaking And the roads they all are closed And the flood it is taking All those dear things we know And before all that water Can flow down and to the sea There'll be high water rising High water rushing over me Well the clouds they have gathered In the sky high overhead And the rain keeps on falling And I fear it will not end And before all that water Can flow down and to the sea There'll be high water rising High water washing over me

Well they say that in time every memory will fade All the worlds that we built and the places we played And the payers of paint will be full overlaid And instead we will see the next act in the show Unworried by echoes of long long ago Well they said at the time I was running away From the buses and slush and the puddles and spray While the red lights were flooding that dead motorway I said why would I run from a past that is gone But the past it comes calling and still chases on So don't bring me a drink that will deaden my mind Breathing mists of forgetfulness balmy benign With a scent of cut flowers and a burnt taste of pine For I've drunk it before and I know what it's worth When memories are stirred and come bubbling forth So let me forget about all that was lost And don't try to chase over this wasteland I've crossed Don't call with reminders of what's left in the past Reminders of sweetness are bitter with pain And I'd rather remember the redbrick and rain
